Perfect short and simple picture book that does what it says on the tin。

Erica

Appropriate for even very young children。 Important backmatter to share as well!

Karen

Great book to introduce young children to the sad situation of refugees。

Gretchen

I really like the simplicity of this book。 It asks a question on the cover and it answers it in clear and simple text that doesn't get into any particular political situation or controversial discussion。 This is a great book for young students just to gain familiarity with the word and as a jumping-off point for older students。 With the constant changes and troubles in our world, understanding this word and gaining empathy for others is a critical skill for the future。 I really like the simplicity of this book。 It asks a question on the cover and it answers it in clear and simple text that doesn't get into any particular political situation or controversial discussion。 This is a great book for young students just to gain familiarity with the word and as a jumping-off point for older students。 With the constant changes and troubles in our world, understanding this word and gaining empathy for others is a critical skill for the future。 。。。more

Simple text makes such a complex story accessible and understandable for younger children。

With the help of brightly colored child-like digital illustrations and child-appropriate language, this storybook does a good job discussing what is a refugee。 First, the author introduces young readers to what is a refugee, how do people become refugees and the struggles that refugees face even when they do get away from the dangers of their homelands。 Second, the author discusses the hardships of living in a refugee camp and how it affects the people involved seeing how most of them are homesi With the help of brightly colored child-like digital illustrations and child-appropriate language, this storybook does a good job discussing what is a refugee。 First, the author introduces young readers to what is a refugee, how do people become refugees and the struggles that refugees face even when they do get away from the dangers of their homelands。 Second, the author discusses the hardships of living in a refugee camp and how it affects the people involved seeing how most of them are homesick and are concerned for the ones they might have had to leave behind。 I feel like along with the text, the illustrations might give young readers the impression that the book was made by a child which will make it easier for them to find relatable which might result in a deeper understanding of the heavy topic that is the refugee crisis that is a topic that even adults try to avoid sometimes。 As a future teacher, I would most definitely use this book in an elementary grade level classroom (2nd-4th) to introduce the topic of refugees。 。。。more

I think this is a good book to read with your kids。 It will help them gain an understanding of what a refugee is and how people end up becoming refugees。

Jessica

Simple, cute and educational for kids of all ages。

What Is a Refugee? is a great nonfiction book explaining what a refugee is to young students in simpler terms。 I enjoyed how the book was informative to young readers。 I do feel that students may not pick up the book, but I would encourage my students to read it。 I want my students to educate themselves on political stances。 The illustrations in this book were cartoon-like but offered up diversity。 I love how the book ended with quotes from refugees and some famous refugees。

I enjoyed this book via a virtual read aloud by 2nd Grade Greenleaf Teachers。 We look forward to seeing it in print very soon and I can write a more thorough review at that time。For more children's literature, middle grade literature, and YA literature reviews, feel free to visit my personal blog at The Miller Memo!!

This is a brilliant introductory text for younger readers。 In simple text and colourful illustrations, Gravel explains what a refugee is and why people like you and me had to leave their country。 The back matter contains illustrated pictures of refugee kids who told Gravel something about themselves。 It also contains a list of famous refugees。 My only quibble with this book is that I wish there had been a page and statement talking about climate refugees。

Liz

Elise Gravel writes a great book on an important topic for kids。 This book is a perfect resource for any classroom。

Annamarie Carlson (she, her)

A very simple explanation for young children, defining the word refugee and showing how refugee kids are just like other kids。 While this may be a good tool for a preschool group, I would suggest something a bit more nuanced for older preschoolers and beyond。

The topic of refugees is never easy to explain, but Elise Gravel defines it in an age appropriate manner。 Good to pair with an early biography about a refugee like Malala。

Barbara

In the picture book What is a Refugee by Elise Gravel, simple, but colorful illustrations and a sparse text tell the story of what refugees are and why they leave their country to travel to a new land。 Back matter contains a page of information about refugee children the author met。 She also included short descriptions of famous refugees。 This lovely, little book sheds light on the human element of this abstract concept for children ages 5-9。

Sarah Choate

good intro to what it means to be a refugee

Copyright: 2019Genre: Non-FictionTheme: RefugeesMy favorite part of the book is the simplicial yet deep meaning of the topic of refugee that is easy for young students to understand。 One way I could use this book in my classroom is teaching why refugees need to seek help from other countries because of the status of their home country。

Ivy Moser

Great introduction to refugees for younger children (5-7?)。

Sean Kottke

Beautiful, bold artwork, simple humane message, and profiles of refugee children interviewed for the book。

Marcela Zuluaga

It is very appropriated to talk about what does a refugee means and how important it is to include them in our school, setting, and community regardless of where they are from。 Behind refugee people, there are thousands of stories and to have empathy, is the best way to understand them。 Big discussions with children could happen after reading this storybook。

Freddie D

A patient approach to explaining the concept of refugees that is both informative and kind。

Elise Gravel is just so excellent all round。 We love her stuff。 This isn’t the first book we’ve read about refugees but it’s done the best at explaining why they have to move and what the downsides are。

Simple, easy-to-understand look at refugees and some of the reasons why they need to leave their home countries。 All the illustrations are multicultural, with different skin and hair colors。
